Privacy policy

This explains what personal information Edinburgh Music Centre collects, why, what cookies we use and what your rights are.

Who we are

The Edinburgh Music Centre Limited, trading as Edinburgh Music Centre, registered in Scotland (SC586576), registered office 563b Lanark Road, Juniper Green, Edinburgh EH14 5DB, is the controller of your information. ICO registration number: ZC273758.

For anything about your information, email sales@edinburghmusiccentre.com.

What we collect

  • When you order: your name, delivery and billing address, email, phone number, what you bought and your order history. Card details go straight to our payment provider; we never see or store them.
  • If you create an account: your login details and saved addresses.
  • If you sign up to our emails: your email address and whether you open them.
  • When you contact us by email, phone or the website form: what you tell us.
  • When you visit the website: your device, browser, pages viewed and how you arrived, collected through cookies (see Cookies below).

Why we use it, and our legal basis

  • Taking payment, delivering your order, returns and refunds: performing our contract with you.
  • Answering your questions and complaints: our legitimate interest in looking after customers.
  • Keeping order and accounting records: legal obligation (tax and company law).
  • Preventing fraud and keeping the website secure: our legitimate interest.
  • Sending our email newsletter: your consent, or, if you're a customer, our legitimate interest in telling you about similar products. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
  • Website statistics and advertising (Google Analytics, Meta pixel): your consent, given through the cookie banner.

You don't have to give us personal information, but we can't process an order without a name, address and contact details.

Who we share it with

Only with companies that help us run the business, each bound to protect it:

  • Shopify, which runs our website, checkout and customer records
  • Payment providers: Shopify Payments, PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. They run automated fraud checks on payments; if an order is stopped by one, you can ask us to look at it
  • Couriers: Royal Mail and Parcelforce, who get your name, address and phone number to deliver your order
  • Google (Google Analytics and, when connected, Google Merchant Center) and Meta (the Facebook pixel), for website statistics and advertising, only if you accept cookies
  • Shopify's email tool, for our emails
  • Our accountant, and anyone the law requires us to give information to

We never sell your information.

Transfers outside the UK

Some of these companies store information outside the UK, including in Canada, the EU and the USA. Where a country doesn't have UK-approved protection, the transfer is covered by approved safeguards, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK–US data bridge.

How long we keep it

  • Orders and payment records: 6 years after the end of the financial year, as tax law requires
  • Your account: until you close it, or after 3 years without an order
  • Newsletter: until you unsubscribe
  • Messages and enquiries: 2 years
  • Google Analytics data: 2 months for event data and 14 months for user data

Cookies

Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies, such as pixels, work the same way and are covered here too.

Cookies we always use. These make the shop work: your basket, checkout, account login, security and remembering your cookie choice. They're set by Shopify, and the site can't work without them, so they don't need your consent.

Cookies we only use if you agree:

  • Analytics: Google Analytics and Shopify's own statistics tell us which pages people visit and how they found us, so we can improve the site.
  • Advertising: the Meta pixel (Facebook and Instagram) and, when connected, Google's advertising tags measure our adverts and show them to people who have visited the site.

None of these are set until you choose "Accept" in the cookie banner. If you decline, the shop still works.

Changing your mind. Use the "Cookie preferences" link at the bottom of every page to change your choice at any time. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings; blocking essential cookies will stop the basket and checkout working.

Google explains how it uses data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and Meta at facebook.com/privacy/policy.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of your information
  • correct it
  • delete it
  • restrict or object to our use of it
  • stop sending you marketing, at any time, with no reason needed
  • send it to you or another company in a portable format
